Smart cities are developed urban areas designed with a perspective of creating high quality of life and sustainable economic development via advancement in several key sectors including technology, economy, environment, mobility, people, and government. The concept of smart cities is aimed to offer a set of infrastructure and new generation services to citizens and local authorities with the support of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and Internet of things (IoT) capabilities. It consists also of a secure fashion to manage a city's assets. These assets include local departments' information systems, schools, libraries, transportation systems, hospitals, power plants, water supply networks, waste management, law enforcement, and other community services. Another basic issue in this framework is to involve citizens in a live, user-friendly and bi-directional informational structure (citizens/local authorities) with mutual benefits.
In this framework, Hemus Technologies created a Smart City IoT & Cloud system utilizing mobile internet and location services of users/citizens. With this system the citizens and visitors of the city, by tapping their smartphone on one of the many Cloud on Tap Information Tags (COTICs) that are installed all over the city, will be able to receive information about the current environmental conditions, news and alerts directly from the Municipality’s office, some risk assessment based on their health conditions and the current environmental conditions in the area, and also information on a live map about nearby points of interest. This system consists of an administration platform hosted in a secure Cloud, the deployed COTIC tags in the form of adhesive stickers that are installed all over the city, and a front end which the citizens and visitors are able to access via the COTIC tags with tapping their smartphones on them.
A version of this Smart City IoT & Cloud system is already installed by Aratos Group in the City of Athens and in the City of Nafplio, in Greece. Similar versions are currently prepared for Bulgarian and other European cities that have shown interest in our solution.
